From Travel to Sewing: Meet Yazzii Bags

Tuesday, May 19th, 2015

“Life is short. Do it right”

This philosophy has guided Yazzii Bags owner, Yasmita Magan, in all her decisions, especially as she has developed this international company known for producing “the world’s best bag.” [caption id="attachment_3160" align="aligncenter" width="525"]Photo by Gregory Case Photography Photo by Gregory Case Photography[/caption] Born in South Africa, Yasmita is a Canadian citizen who has called Australia her home for the past 26 years.  Once you meet her, you are captivated by her exuberance for life and for her business. It’s easy to see how she acquired the nickname, “Jazzy Yazzii.” With a passion for people and design, Yazzii strives to put her “best foot forward” in all she does. Yasmita’s professional career started in the travel industry. She had seen the need for a travel bag that was versatile and long-lasting, so began developing quality, handmade bags, the forerunners of today’s Yazzii bags.  At age 40, Yasmita left the travel industry and for the past 14 years, has been selling her bags full time. [caption id="attachment_3157" align="aligncenter" width="609"]_I4C8203 Photo by Gregory Case Photography[/caption] The first Yazzii Bags were sold to hold jewelry when traveling. They quickly became popular with crafters as mini craft organizers. Then, in October, 2001, while selling her bags in Sydney Harbor, Yazzii met two women dressmakers who fell in love with her bags and remarked how versatile they could be for storing sewing supplies. Yazii took their suggestions and began marketing her travel bags to the sewing world where their demand has quickly grown All bags are handmade in India in a factory owned by Yasmita. A Hindu, Yazzii speaks their language and feels more comfortable running her company there than in China. She has made 65 trips to India over the years to personally oversee the bag production. Workers sit on the floor as they make the bags. It takes approximately 7 hours to produce one bag!! Yazzii is especially proud of the fact that her bags hold their value.  Her zippers are of the highest quality and remain intact even after 14 years of constant opening and closing. In addition, a specialty line of bags have been designed for quilters Sue Spargo and Jinny Beyer. [caption id="attachment_3161" align="aligncenter" width="613"]Photo by Gregory Case Photography Photo by Gregory Case Photography[/caption] Yazzii Bags are sold in Australia, Europe, Japan and the United States. Being a vendor at Road 2015 was a highlight for Yazzii. She appreciated the “tremendous opportunity” Carolyn Reese offered her to be there. Yazzii’s husband (they’ve been married for 36 years) joined Yazzii for the show, assisting her in selling the bags. They both loved meeting all the quilters, hearing success stories of their Yazzii Bags, and introducing new customers to their product. They are thrilled to return to Road 2016. Yasmita Magan is fulfilling her dream of making a difference in the world, one Yazzii Bag at a time.  ]]>

Road 2015 Faculty Spotlight: Meet this Dynamic Father-Daughter Quilting Duo, John Flynn And Kate Flynn Nichols

Tuesday, November 25th, 2014

On Tuesday, John will be teaching 2012C Glorified Nine Patch and Kate will be teaching 2008C Crosses and Losses

John_Flynn

kateportrait                     What could be more fun than sharing your passion of quilting by giving workshops, creating innovative templates and kits, and bouncing off new ideas with someone from your own family? That is exactly what John Flynn and his daughter, Kate Flynn Nichols, have been doing for over 15 years. Both residents of Montana, they spend a lot of time together fine tuning patterns, assembly directions and pressing techniques so that their templates and laser pre-cut kits go together as easily and smoothly as possible. John got in to the quilting scene in the 1980’s when he was testing the quilt frames that he was designing and building for his wife Brooke. He soon discovered how relaxing hand quilting was and has been working at it ever since.  Kate started quilting in 1988. She grew up watching both her parents quilt.  She went to Guild with them and started stashing fabric at a young age.   Kate entered her first quilt show at just 8 years of age!! As she got older, she was “actually surprised to find out later in life that not everyone quilts!” They each find inspiration for their designs in different ways. For Kate, it comes from nature and her parents’ old magazine collection. John has an engineering background so he finds inspiration in the geometry of objects and from old traditional quilts. John and Kate have different preferences when it comes to working with color. John’s favorite palette is the colors of the rainbow; bright primaries and secondaries.  Kate likes strong pastel combinations and monochromes. Interestingly, Kate is the company’s fabric buyer; she has a sure hand in color selection. While they enjoy their partnership, working closely with each other can have its drawbacks. Kate says, “It’s hard not really having a separation between work and family.  Who wants to plan their next business trip at Thanksgiving dinner?”  John admits his challenge is that since he and Kate both have engineering minds, “they think alike most of the time” which can be both positive and negative. When they aren’t working together, John likes fly fishing, fly tying, and biking.John_Flynn bike riding                 kate and kevinKate, who has been married since August, 2003 to graphic designer Kevin Nichols, enjoys reading, rockhounding, gardening and watching either Animal Planet, the History Channel or the Discovery Channel.           What are their favorite tips for quilters?  From Kate: “Relax and be forgiving with yourself.  You are a human, not a machine and your projects should reflect your humanity!” John adds, “Accuracy, accuracy, accuracy. It is easier to take your time and do it right the first time rather than rush through and do it over and over.” There is still limited space in both of their classes. Why Modern Quilting?

Thursday, April 4th, 2013

Modern Quilting could be found all over Road this year. There were vendors, classes, fabrics and materials all dealing with the modern quilting movement. What is a modern quilt you ask? Emily Cier, one of our modern quilting instructors, described what it isn’t.  “Modern quilts are not easy, sloppy or crooked. Rather, they require good craftsmanship in putting together quilt blocks made of solid colors.”modern

At the lecture, Thoroughly Modern Quilting,” attendees were asked, “Why did you attend this event? Spotted in the class were exhibit curator Helen Remick and her friend of 53 years, Melissa. They have known each other since they were college roommates at UC Davis. Both quilters, Melissa came to Road to see Helen’s exhibit. Together, they wanted to learn more about modern quilting. Most attendees were after the same thing as Helen and Melissa. In addition, they offered these comments:

“ I’ve been a quilter for 30 years and am looking for a new look.”

“I am a displaced quilter. The modern designs make me happy.”

“I like how anything goes with modern quilting.”

“My 28 year old daughter told me about these kinds of quilts.”modern_quilts_img_1581

“I wanted to see first-hand where quilting was going.”

“Our age wants more modern fabrics and looks.”

“I love the designs and enjoy the night time activities at Road.”

“I am looking for new designs and was drawn to the angular quilting.”

Whether someone was an experienced quilter or a newbie, modern quilting was a fun technique to check out.

What do you think about modern quilting?
