Jennifer Bowker - Australia
Jenny Bowker has been working in Textiles for five years. Her background
- life before quilts - was in science. Her contemporary work is usually
based on science or women’s issues, and is moving towards a melding
of fine art work and textile work. She is interested in the way pattern
comes into many parts of our lives, and often includes some geometrical
piecing in her work. She has four children and a very supportive husband
who works as a diplomat for the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
She is influenced by the years spent living in Arab and Islamic countries,
and much of her work reflects my love of the Middle East. She has lived
in Syria, Western Samoa, Malaysia, Jordan and in Jerusalem. www.jennybowker.com
Jean Brown – Oregon
Jean’s quilts and oil painting art works are shown at many shows
and events. She has taught both arts for many years. Unexpectedly one
day, Jean discovered a different way to hand quilt with great comfort
and speed. Her classes have been all across the country, many guilds and
on television. Jean was a charter member of the Southern California Council
of Quilt Guilds and has created seven new guilds over the years.

Perhaps no single teacher in the quilting industry
is single-handedly as responsible as Eleanor Burns for bringing so
many people into the fold of quilt making. Her early training as a
teacher contributes to the simple, easy-to-understand style that makes
her books and television series so popular. www.quilt-in-a-day.com

| John Flynn - Montana |
 |
Montanan John Flynn is a prize-winning quilter, author,
designer and inventor of the no-baste machine quilting system, the
Flynn Multi-Frame. With over a dozen years of experience leading quilt
workshops coupled with his engineering background, John brings a unique
blend of skills to the classroom. He is always challenging himself
to make piecing and quilting techniques faster, easier and more accurate
for his students. What time saving trick will you learn in his next
class? There is a difference between making a living and living. John
Flynn is fortunate to be able to make a living at something he loves;
quilting. He tells the story of how a civil engineer became an internationally
known quilt teacher in his entertaining lecture and slide presentation,

| Diane Gaudynski –
Wisconson |
 |
Diane Gaudynski of Waukesha, Wisconsin, was named
a “Master” quilter in 2002 by NQA, and is the four-time
recipient of the Bernina award for Machine Workmanship at the AQS
Show in Paducah, KY. She has also won the prestigious Pfaff Master
Award for Machine Artistry at the 2001 and 2002 IQA Shows in Houston.
While earning a reputation for the use of dull “mud” colors,
she has specialized in ornate, intricate machine quilting of traditional
and original feather designs. Her four cats help her anchor her quilts,
and lend some extra texture to the surface with their donated cat
hair. Her book on machine quilting techniques is available from AQS,
“Guide to Machine Quilting.” personal.pitnet.net/dgquilt |
Rusty Hedrick – California
Virginia (Rusty) Hedrick, a transplanted Kansan, was born in Wellington,
Kansas. Rusty moved to California in 1947. The Midwest influence as never
left Rusty as she brought her love of quilting with her from Kansas, where
she had grown up in a quilting family. It just seemed natural for her
to teach others to quilt and was soon giving lectures as well. These activities
inspired her to found the Inland Empire Quilter’s Quilt in Corona,
California. Traditional Quiltworks magazine has featured Rusty in their
“Ask the Experts” columns, and also featured one of her quilts
with accompanying pattern. Her selection of a quilt also appears in the
Quilter’s Newsletter book “One Quilt, One Moment: Quilts that
Change Lives.” Rusty has lectured and taught extensively throughout
California for the past 25 years, and also upon invitation in other areas.
She demonstrates quilting at many quilt shows and loves to show her technique
to those attending shows.

Gloria Loughman - Australia
Gloria has been teaching patchwork for many years, introducing adults
and children to this craft. She likes to challenge her students to design
their own quilts but she is happy to provide patterns for those less confident.
She has traveled to many states in Australia, running workshops for small
groups of country quilters as well as teaching classes for larger guilds
in the major cities. In the past two years, she has taught classes in
Japan, a series of workshops in Britain and a number of different workshops
at the Symposium in New Zealand. Her quilts have been features in a number
of magazines including Australian Patchwork and Quilting, Down Under Quilts,
and Quilter’s Newsletter. www.ozquiltnetwork.org.au/members/loughman1.htm
Jan Mullen - Australia
Australian quilt maker extraordinaire Jan Mullen trained as a secondary
art/craft teacher majoring in textiles before meeting the first love of
her life, Ben. Together, they set about producing three major works, their
darlings – Brodie, Keelan, and Miffany. Rather than continuing to
work in this theme, her second love, textiles, re-emerged and started
to dominate their lives. First, quilts were made for family members, then
an opportunity to teach quiltmaking locally followed. Finally, a commercial
venture was consolidated with the start of Stargazey Quilts in 1996.
Only a few years down the track, Stargazey Quilts has
published an extensive catalog of original, crooked patterns. In designing
fabrics for Marcus Brothers, new challenges continually appear that introduce
Jan to other related disciplines. She does enjoy teaching others her wicked
ways, particularly when guiding students toward working more confidently
and intuitively with color. She also enjoys showing them that it is often
possible to dispense with rules. In rare moments she likes to produce
art quilts, walk the beach with Celeste and Rocket, and fill the bikkie
jar for the darlings. www.stargazey.com
Barbara Olson - Montana
Barbara is a national and international award-winning quilt artist, teacher
and lecturer. Her quilts have appeared in many publications and exhibits
around the world. “In The Beginning” one of Barbara’s
art quilts was chosen as one of the best 100 American Quilts of The Century.
Many of her art quilts are included in private and corporations collects
across the country. For the last ten years she has been developing and
giving workshops and lectures for those interested in expanding their
unique creative talents in the area of quilt arts. When Barbara is not
on the road teaching, lecturing or judging quilt shows she is at home
in her mountain top studio with her husband, two dogs and two cats in
Billings, Montana. www.barbaraolsonquiltart.com
Sharon Schamber – Utah
| Joan Shay - Massachusetts |
 |
Joan Shay is an award-winning quilter from Cape Cod,
Mass. She has developed a new appliquéé technique “Appli-Bond©”
which enables the quilter to make realistic 3-D flowers with sophisticated,
pleasing results. Appli-Bond is the fusing of two or more layers of
fabric together with a bonding material. The petals and leaves are
cut from the bonded fabric. This eliminates the need to finish the
edges of the piece. Surprisingly, these flowers are washable. In addition
to patterns, her company Petal Play offers Appli-Bond needles, templates,
pre-cut petals and kits. Joan is the author of Petal by Petal and
Petal Play the Traditional Way published by AQS. She has appeared
on “Quilting from the Heartland” with Shar Jorgensen and
“Simply Quilts” with Alex Anderson. Joan has published
articles in “The American Quilter,” “Miniature Quilts,”
“Quilting is Hot” and “Quilting Today.” She
travels nationally, teaching at guilds, conferences and shops. Her
classes are fun and hands-on. www.petalplay.com |
| Marcia Stevens - Minnesota |
 |
Marcia began quilting in 1975 when she and her
husband, Tom, moved to the north woods of Minnesota to "return
to nature". As she became involved in the local quilting guild,
she realized a need for machine quilting.
In 1984 she purchased her first shortarm commercial
quilting machine and put in many hours of practice. Boredom with
overall patterns led to experimentation, frustration and finally
triumph. Marcia was convinced that these machines were capable of
much more! In 1986 she upgraded to a larger longarm quilting machine
and began a full-time career under the business name, Little Pine
Studio.
Her creativity and innovation led to the invention
of many techniques and patterns that are longarm industry standards
today. Many of Marcia's clients have won major quilt show awards
and recognition as a result of her quilting.
Demand for her quilting and expertise led to the
establishment of her machine quilting workshops in 1993. She teaches
individuals how to maximize the capabilities of their quilting machines.
Marcia also publishes a quarterly newsletter for longarm quilters
entitled "Unlimited Possibilities". www.houseofhanson.com/mstevens.html |
Shirley Stevenson – Texas
Shirley is the daughter of a fifth generation Texas ranch family. She
is a graduate of The University of Texas School of Art and has had several
art related careers such as: public school art teacher, studio artist,
and interior designer. Since 1981, she has concentrated on the design
of quilts, quilted wearables and crafts. Shirley traces her interest in
creative sewing back to age eight when she designed her first garment.
She still loves to design and develop new ideas using shape, color and
texture and to share the ideas with others through her teaching and published
quilts, clothing and craft patterns. Shirley is a Fairfield Fashion Designer
and her garments have been juried into the American Quilter’s Society
all six times she submitted slides. Her quilts have been shown and/or
sold in galleries and museums including the American Museum of Folk Art
and the Dallas Museum of Art. Currently Shirley is a lecturer and teacher
of quilting and wearable art and has a successful line of quilting, clothing,
and craft patterns known as Color Me Patterns.
Trish Stuart - Texas
Trish inherited her artistic talent from her mother, being taught from
an early age about line and color, as well as how to sew. Teaching quilting
and art to others since 1990, Trish began putting her unique designs into
patterns in 1995. A lifelong Alaskan until 2002, she was strongly influenced
by the majestic beauty of this great state. Now that she has moved to
Texas, her emphasis is still on nature, capturing the freedom and grace
of wildflowers, trees and lakes in her new designs. For the past year,
Trish has traveled throughout the US and Canada, inspiring others as she
presents workshops and lectures on color, techniques, and the use of crayons
and inks in quilts. A mother of two boys, she is aware of the limited
time available for quilting and has developed a number of techniques that
allow for fast, accurate piecing. A watercolor artist, Trish has translated
the sophisticated look of painting into quilts by developing a simple
method using a combination of crayons and inks to replace time-consuming
appliquéé. Don’t be surprised, though, when occasionally her
sense of humor pops up in a whacky cat or other form of whimsy. www.ttthreads.com
