SU01 . Art by the Half Dozen $80
Pamela Allen One Day

Is it possible to make six quilts in one day? Pamela gives a resounding YES with her small format and spontaneous creativity that bypasses all the pre-thinking and goes directly to the heart. You will be guided through six important design elements by creating a small quilt that concentrates on each. We will explore composition, color, narrative, embellishment and machine quilting in the course of the day. Skill Level: All.

Supply List: 9,10,11,12,14,15,21,24. Other Supplies: spray baste and mask (optional), embroidery floss, large hand needles (3 1/2¡± dollmaking needle is ideal). Fabric: selection of FQ sized pieces in all types (silk, velvet, corduroy, rayon, etc.), selection of black, white and black & white prints, and batting for six small quilts. Optional but nice: sewing machine if you HATE hand sewing.

 
     

SU02 . Stars All Around Table Topper $75
Eleanor Burns One Day

Celebrate the 1940¡¯s with a festive table topper featuring several new techniques from the new Victory Quilts book by Eleanor Burns. The project combines both 12¡± and 6¡± blocks and the fabrics are from the Victory Garden line developed by Benartex. Sewing machines for this class are provided by Baby Lock. Note: Same as SA02. Skill Level: All.

Supply List: 9,11,12,13,27,30,31,36. Book: Victory Quilts by Eleanor Burns. Other Supplies: stiletto, wooden iron, 6¡±x12¡± acrylic ruler with 45 degree lines, 6 1/2¡± triangle square up by QIAD, Invisigrip. Kit Fee: $35, includes all fabric to complete project including binding, and mini ruler set by QIAD.

     

SU03 . X Marks the Spot $80
Sharyn Craig One Day

Sharyn has done it again with this incredibly fun and simple, yet oh-so-exciting block. You¡¯ll love her cutting and sewing system, not to mention all the incredibly inspiring ideas for setting your blocks together. Skill Level: All.

Supply List: 1,8,11,27,30,31,32,33,34,36. Other Supplies: Temporary Bond Glue Stick, and 6 1/2¡± square acrylic ruler. Fabric: E-mail Sharyn for detailed fabric list at gcraig@mail.sdsu.edu.

 
     

SU04 – Folk Art Appliqué Quilt $65
Carmen Geddes One Day

This class will highlight a fun, fast and easy machine appliqué technique created by award winning quilter Sharon Schambers. Carmen is a certified instructor for Sharon’s method. If you have ever been overwhelmed by an appliqué project or have always wanted to try but were not quite sure about the handwork – then this class is for you! Enjoy beautiful, instant success in appliqué that will look hand done! Sewing machines for this class are provided by Viking. Note: Same as SU04. Skill Level: All.

Supply List: 9,12,13,14,15,22,33,34. Other supplies: stapler and staple remover. Other supplies, fabric and pattern will be provided as a kit in class at no additional charge.

     

SU05 – Wild & Crazy Appliqué Curves $65
Cathie Hoover One Day

Cathie’s original block provides movement by utilizing both curves and diagonal lines, and can be as wild and crazy as you can handle. Embellish your blocks with the decorative stitches built into the Bernina sewing machine. Bring all threads you have on hand and Cathie will show you how to add sparkle and pizzazz to your blocks. Cathie will also discuss additional goodies that are added after quilting for the maximum wild and crazy impact. Sewing machines for this class are provided by Bernina. Skill Level: All.

Supply List: 8,9,12,13,14,15,27,29,30,32. Other Supplies: silver art pencil, Ultra Fine Point black Sharpie, clear monofilament quilting thread, trims (can match or contrast fabric) 1 yd. each – rickrack in various widths, woven braids, ribbons, fancy yarns, etc., assorted iron-on patches no larger than 3” square, buttons, beads, charms, iron-on crystals. Fabric: 1 yd. large-scale print that includes 3-5 colors, 1/2 yd. complementary large-scale print, 12-15 FQs that coordinate with large-scale prints (i.e. dots, stripes, conversation prints). SU06 – A Vintage Challenge $70
Mary Kerr One Day

This is a fast paced workshop will challenge students to create a small quilt using a surprise box of vintage blocks, buttons and trims. Students will discover their inner creativity as they are given permission to play within a limited choice of vintage materials. Skill Level: All.

Supply List: 8,9,11,12,13,14,15,26. Fabric: 1 yd. solid fabric (neutrals work well). Kit Fee: $20, includes vintage block, trim and embellishments. Optional but nice: camera, sewing machine.

     

SU07 – In Stitches $65
Martha Nordstrand One Day

This is a must for all who want to learn the secret to those wonderful stitches in quilts of handwork. We will learn over 30 stitches from the four basic groups of embroidery: straight, looped, knotted and laid work. We will also learn how to combine stitches for special effects to embellish quilts or projects. You will create your own reference guide from a sampler completed in class. Also covered will be needles, background fabrics and THREADS!!! If you can thread a needle, you can do this! Skill Level: All.

Supply List: 9,11,15,21. Other Supplies: package of crewel embroidery needles of assorted sizes, package of tapestry needles in assorted styles, package of chenille needles in larger sizes, small hoop no larger than 8”, assorted threads to match fabrics, rough twine or other textured yarn. Fabric: piece of Aida cloth (at least 12”x12”), piece of fabric suitable for making a nice sampler to record your stitches as you learn them. Kit Fee: $10, includes background and introduction of embroidery, reference page of books, straight stitches illustrated, looped stitches illustrated, knotted stitches illustrated, laid stitches illustrated, novelty stitches illustrated, combinations for crazy stitches, stitches to embellish our quilts.

 
     

SU08 – Block Design and Gridwork $65
Gina Perkes One Day

Have you ever been intimidated by the thought of gridwork quilting or thought that gridwork was limited to crosshatching? Come and gain confidence for a new twist on gridwork quilting. We will explore both straight gridwork designs and freehand quilting based on a grid. We will also combine the two techniques for show stopping quilting designs! You will also learn how to create your own original block designs using a grid and how you can fill in those motifs to make them really pop! Skill Level: All.

SU09 – Rose Dream $35
Donna Poster  Morning Class

Hard to believe, but these curved pieces are rotary cut!  This old favorite is a wonderful way to learn curved piecing on the machine as the curves are very shallow.  Donna’s cutting and stitching hints make this quilt easy and fun!  Skill Level:  Intermediate

Supply List: 1,8,9,10,12,13,14,27,29,30.  Pattern available in class.  Other Supplies: 1/4” quilter’s tape, 5” and 6” circle templates for rotary cutting.  Note: the circles may be cut from template plastic. Fabric: 1 yd. each light and dark. Pre cut each into 36 squares 4 1/2” x 4 1/2, 3 each 4” x 40”.  This will make 9 blocks.

 
     

SU10 – Cathedral Window Nine Patch $70
Shelley Swanland One Day

Learn Shelley’s construction process for machine stitched Cathedral Windows while creating this dramatic wallhanging. The nine patch of Cathedral Windows in the center is surrounded by a zigzag inner border. Students will learn 3-D piecing. At the quilting stage the rolled bias folds become the curved chains. This process will be thoroughly explained and demonstrated. Skill Level: All.

Supply List: 1,2,3,7,8,9,11,12,13,22,27,29,30,33,34,36. Pattern: Cathedral Window Nine Patch. Fabric: (if not buying kit) 1/2 yd. dark cotton for background, 1/4 yd. light batik, 1/2 yd. med. batik, 5/8 yd. multicolored batik. Optional Kit: $18, includes fabric to complete top. Optional but nice: 27” square of batting and backing.

 
     

SU11 – Whirlpool $75
Virginia Walton One Day

This dramatic quilt explodes with energy and movement, sliding through a color spectrum as the fabric ‘ribbons’ spin, twist and turn as though caught in a whirlpool. Only basic machine piecing and rotary cutting skills are needed to make this remarkable easy quilt. With the Creative Curves Rulers students will cut circular curves with seam allowances included. Learning how to use this ruler to cut a variety of curved shapes is an essential part of this workshop. Virginia’s unique no pins circular curved piecing technique is the highlight of this workshop. Skill Level: All

Supply List: 1,2,12,13,26,28,31,32. Other Supplies: Creative Curves 1 1/2” and 2” ruler set. May purchase from teacher at class. Fabric: 1 1/2 yds. background fabric, light or dark. Kit Fee: $35, includes whirlpool and star fabric needed to make the quilt (except the background) and patter

 
     

SU12 – EQ6 Borders $75
Sheila Williams One Day

You know how to layout a quilt in EQ6, now it is time to learn how to work with the Border Layer. In EQ6, you can create grand border designs that will really make your quilt designs stand out. Sheila will show you how to create pieced, appliquéd and foundation pieced borders. You will even learn how to create rounded, scalloped and prairie point borders. Then EQ6 will calculate the yardage needed and print templates for these borders. Students must have good computer skills for this class and a working knowledge of EQ6. Computer technical support is not available. Skill Level: Intermediate.

Supply List: 14,15. Other Supplies: Personal laptop computer with CD-ROM drive, external mouse, computer power supply, EQ6 installed and activated, EQ6 User Manuals, highlighter, paper clips in multiple colors, computer eye glasses (if you wear them). Optional software: Sew Precise 1-4, BlockBase2, Stash 1-19 or any EQ Block add-ons. Kit Fee: $10, includes all sample files to be used in class. Important Requirements: You MUST have good working knowledge of your computer. If you borrow or purchase a new laptop for class, please spend some time getting to know the computer before class. EQ6 MUST be installed, activated and working.

     

SU13 – Paintstik Inspirations $35
Laura Murray Morning Class

Learn a variety of techniques using Shiva® Artist’s Paintstiks® that result in layers of color, design and texture on plain colored fabrics. Create a series of samples and discover the wonderful luminescence that these “altered fabrics” can give to your projects. Skill Level: All.

 

Supply List: 14,15. Other Supplies: 3/4” or 1” wide blue painter’s tape, 4-6 paper towels, apron or smock (wear old clothes). Fabric: minimum of 14 – 12” squares pre-washed fabric (can be cotton, silk or synthetic), at least 10 need to be dark color, 4 light (can be solid, hand-dyed or subtle tone-on-tone). Kit Fee: $15, includes one stencil brush, one paintstik and use of instructor’s paintstik supplies and tools. Optional but nice: 1 or 2 stamps with simple, bold designs to be used under fabric to create a rubbing, other textured surfaces such as wine mesh, small rubber sink mat, corrugated cardboard. Don’t go shopping, look around the house for possibilities.
