SA01 – Under the Influence $80
Pamela Allen One Day

 

Most artists look at and admire the work of others. The dilemma is, how can one achieve a personal content to our work and avoid the dreaded label of “derivative”? In the genre of fabric collage/art quilt, Pamela will help you to translate a work of art into an original and personal vision. There will be discussion and critiquing of the nature of art history and how it can broaden your visual vocabulary. There will be exciting hands-on translation of that influence into a small art quilt with the emphasis being placed on a personal expression rather than copying. Skill Level: All.

Supply List: 9,11,12,14,15,21,24. Other Supplies: spray baste and mask (optional), embroidery floss, large hand needles (3 1/2” dollmaking needle is ideal), collection of your favorite artist’s reproductions. Fabric: selection of FQ sized pieces all types (silk, velour, rayon, velvet, cotton, recycled clothing, etc.), batting for approx. 20” quilt. Optional but nice: sewing machine if you HATE hand sewing.

     

SA02 – Stars All Around Table Topper $75
Eleanor Burns One Day

Celebrate the 1940’s with a festive table topper featuring several new techniques from the new Victory Quilts book by Eleanor Burns. The project combines both 12” and 6” blocks and the fabrics are from the Victory Garden line developed by Benartex. Sewing machines for this class are provided by Baby Lock. Note: Same as SU02. Skill Level: All.

Supply List: 9,11,12,13,27,30,31,36. Book: Victory Quilts by Eleanor Burns. Other Supplies: stiletto, wooden iron, 6”x12” acrylic ruler with 45˚ lines, 6 1/2” triangle square up by QIAD, Invisigrip. SA03 – Compass For Almost All Quilters $80
Sharyn Craig One Day

If you’ve ever thought about making a Mariner’s Compass but were too intimidated by all those points, then this class is for you. With its scale and simplicity of design (only 8 points) it is very do-able. If you can sew close to an accurate quarter-inch seam allowance then success is guaranteed. So, come, bring your fabric, and prepare to be delighted at your results. Skill Level: All

SA04 – Folk Art Appliqué Quilt $65
Carmen Geddes One Day

This class will highlight a fun, fast and easy machine appliqué technique created by award winning quilter Sharon Schambers. Carmen is a certified instructor for Sharon’s method. If you have ever been overwhelmed by an appliqué project or have always wanted to try but were not quite sure about the handwork – then this class is for you! Enjoy beautiful, instant success in appliqué that will look hand done! Sewing machines for this class are provided by Viking. Note: Same as SU04. Skill Level: All.

Supply List: 9,12,13,14,15,22,33,34. Other supplies: stapler and staple remover. Other supplies, fabric and pattern will be provided as a kit in class at no additional charge.

     

SA05 – Machine Appliqué $65
Cathie Hoover One Day

Machine appliqué is a skill that gets better with practice. This workshop features a Bernina sewing machine that will make appliquéing easy and your stitches beautiful. You will learn the correct techniques and practice them while you make two small samples. Instruction includes appliquéing with the tried-and-true satin stitch and blanket stitch. Both surface applied appliqués and machine reverse appliqué techniques are included. Sewing machines for this class are provided by Bernina. Skill Level: All.

Other Supplies: 6”x12” acrylic ruler, Schmetz Sharp point needle size 80, Schmetz Topstitch needle (130N) size 100, extra fine 100% nylon or 100% polyester thread for bobbin (NOT clear, monofilament; YLI’s Lingerie in black or Superior’s Bottom Line are good), 1/4 yd. WonderUnder (no Heat n Bond), 1/2 yd. Tear-Away stabilizer, threads for appliqué (cotton, rayon, cotton-wrapped polyester) in purple, black, white, light pink, bright pink, metallic silver, YLI monofilament thread in Smoke. SA06 – 3-D Rising Star Quilt $70
Sharlene Jorgenson One Day

Fast cutting and sewing techniques are used to create the illusion of depth in this class. Don’t let the angles in this quilt block scare you because all the math and drafting is done for you. Learn how you can turn any nine-patch that has half square triangles and diamonds into a 3-D block.

Supply List: 1,2,8,9,11,12,13,28,29,30,31. Pattern: Pandora’s Box by Quilting in the Heartland (available in class). Other Supplies: stiletto (available in class). Fabric: 1 FQ each of light, medium and dark for small stars, 1/3 yd. each of light, medium and dark background, 1 yd. dark for large star points and binding.

 
     

SA07 – Searching for Clues $70
Mary Kerr One Day

During this interactive fabric dating workshop students will discover the clues hidden in their antique quilts and tops as we discuss trends, fabrics, patterns and styles over the last 200 years. There are lots of show and tell items and a wide variety of fabrics that span 200 years of American textile history. Each participant brings 2-3 pieces to share and discuss. Skill Level: All.

Supply List: 14,15. Fabric: 2-3 vintage quilts or tops to share and discuss. Optional but nice: camera.

     

SA08 – Open Thread Bar $75
Cindy Needham One Day

This is a fun, informative and hands-on workshop where you learn all about threads! You learn how to successfully use specialty threads, how to become comfortable changing your machine tension, how to obtain those perfect stitches and how to make good choices in your thread selection. You will be treated to an Open Thread Bar that is stocked with Superior Threads to play with for the day. In class, you will create a reference panel of threads, plus learn how to thread paint on provided floral panels or create a small wholecloth quilt using provided stencils. You will leave with confidence to use any and all threads in your machine. Skill Level: All.

Supply List: 1,3,5,7,22,36. Other Supplies: 90/14 and 100/16 Schmetz topstitch needles. Kit Fee: $10, for use of teacher supplies.

     

SA09 – Fabric-Scapes $65
Martha Nordstrand One Day

Create a landscape design using your photos or original drawing. Students will learn to layer fabrics to make mountains, meadows, seascapes, etc. We will freeform cut and slash into fabric and make our own fabric using my method of turning edges. Skill Level: All.

Supply List: 9,10,11,12,14,15,16,17,18,32,33,34,36. Other supplies: set of small flat edge and Phillips screwdrivers, 2-3 Avery glue sticks, Roxanne’s Glue-Baste-It or Quilters Choice, permanent fabric glue, small acrylic or plastic cutting board (8.5”x11” is best), small plastic cup for water, baby wipes, assorted threads to match fabrics, size 10 appliqué needles. Fabric: greens, browns, nature prints, water prints, landscape prints or novelty fabrics. Kit Fee: $15, includes basic appliqué instructions and cheat sheet, directions on how to plan and balance a landscape, an autumn scene, a spring scene, an underwater scene, sheets of plastic to cover design, a sheet of embroidery ideas to enhance design, several pages of illustrations of nature scenes in color, template page of trees and shrubs, Ziploc bag for storage.

 
     

SA10 . Chinese Lanterns $85
Christine Porter One Day

Play with a diamond and see what happens! By cutting strips then using the 45 degree diamond ruler in a special way you can make Chinese Lanterns which look complicated but are easily pieced. Small rectangles are fused over the diamonds and you can have fun playing with your focus fabric to find good motifs. Ideal for exciting small or large quilts, you can use theme, seasonal or just your favorite fabric, but bring as many matching colors as you can the more fabric, the better the quilt! This quilt is featured in Tessellation Quilts by Christine Porter (Page 69). Skill Level: All.

Supply List: 1,2,3,8,11,12,13,26,27,29,30,32,33,34,35,36. Other Supplies: Diamond Template Ruler (available in class for $20), dark matching thread for satin stitch. Fabric: 2 yds. patterned dark ¡°focus¡± for borders, 10 coordinating lights to mediums, 1/4 yd. each.

 
     

SA11 – Lazy Daisy $70
Donna Poster One Day

Rotary cut the triangle, then whip those little “petals” on with this quick and easy hand appliqué method, then finish it at the machine!! Donna’s “roll-turn” appliqué method is fast, easy and fun. Great as a scrap quilt or in two colors. Skill Level: All.

Supply List: 1,8,9,10,12,13,14,27,29,30. Other Supplies: hand sewing needle, (12) 2 1/2”x4 1/2” of freezer paper and pattern (sold in class). Fabric: all fabric 100% cotton (batiks not recommended), 5/8 yd. each dark and light OR scraps to equal that. Optional but nice: thread wax or conditioner, needle threader, thimble

 
     

SA12 – A Judge Goes to the Edge $65
Lois Smith One Day

A hands-on workshop which considers various edge finishes for quilts. Course will cover: basic double fold binding techniques, two color bindings, no binding but finished edges, faced irregular edge finish, cording, piping and mini-piping. Skill Level: All.

Supply List: 1,2,3,4,5,9,11,12,13,14,18. Other Supplies: neutral thread, black thread, one hand needle. Kit Fee: $15, includes 3 small quilt squares and various fabric strips cut for hanging sleeves, piping, binding, and cording.

     

SA13 – Longarm Appliqué $35
Gina Perkes Morning Class

Have you ever thought of using that wonderful longarm machine for more than just quilting? Have you ever loaded your quilt and thought that something was missing? Come and learn this exciting technique for applying appliqué pieces to your quilts or wearables using your longarm before or after the quilt is loaded. We will explore unusual fabrics that do not ravel and beautiful quilting stitches that will serve as both your appliqué stitch and your quilting! You will also discover how to make your quilts truly dance with the addition of fibers to the edges of your appliqué. Bring a smile and an open mind to this fun and exciting class! Skill Level: All.

SA14 – Splash of Red Wallhanging $35
Baby Lock Evening Class

Black and white are striking and beautiful colors, especially when combined. When a hint of red is added, the look goes from striking to stunning. This wallhanging is created using traditional and non-traditional quilting techniques. From perfect 1/4” piecing to a unique appliqué technique using freemotion quilting, this project is an exploration into the creative side of quilting. Sewing machines for this class are provided by Baby Lock. Skill Level: All.

SA15 – Adapting Patterns to SNS Technique $40
Jodi Barrows Evening Class

This pattern adapting class is designed to teach beginners and challenge the advanced. Learn how super easy it is to take any pattern or design and adapt it to the Square in a Square® System! This technique is so great that soon you will be making all of your quilt tops this way. If you have never sewn a quilt using this technique we recommend that you watch the classes on our website or take advantage of our instructional DVD. This will help you understand the system and concept. If you are new to “design” all together, we welcome you! We will start at the beginning and work our way through the total quilt top. This includes: SNS Options™ 1-17, quilt dissection, SNS Option™ selection, Block and SNS Option™ sizing, SNS Option™ Charts, fabric yardage charts, and border sizing. Skill Level: All.

Supply List: 14,15,16,19,25. Book: Advancing On II by Jodi Barrows. Other Supplies: 1”x6” and 1”x12” acrylic rulers. Several books or magazines with quilts that you would like to adapt to Square in a Square.

 
     

SA16 . Lakeside Mystery II $75
Cathy Farris 6-Hour Evening Class, 6pm-12pm

Lets play with color!  This original quilt will tickle your fancy. We are going to use 7 different colors and accent them all with black.  The colors will just pop off the quilt.  Pick your own fabrics or get a kit of Hoffman Batiks ($85) from the instructor. Simple piecing techniques put this quilt together and let the color placement do the work.   Strips set made before class will speed up the process so the fun begins when you walk in the door to class.  This quilt makes all that see it go WOW!  The finished quilt is approximately 60 x 60.

Supply List: 1,2,9,12,13,27,29,30,32,33,34,35,36. Other Supplies: 6 1/2¡± square acrylic ruler with 45 degree line. Fabric: 4 yds. black, 7 different fabrics that go from light to dark, colors 1-6: 1/2 yd. each, color 7: 1 1/2 yds. SA17 – Trimmed Ribbon Wrap $35

Bullion roses will be worked on a double-sided satin ribbon that can be used to wrap your guest towels, trim baskets and more. Students will learn how to work with rayon threads to achieve the 3-D flowers. Stitches learned will be stem stitch, bullion, leaf, French Knot and cast-on.

SA18 – Jazz Up Your Creation with Surface Embellishment $35

Threads, ribbons, yarns and fibers add dimensional interest and detail to any finished project. The effects can be subtle or dramatic depending on your personal preference. Join Jane as she teaches you basic embroidery stitches and then shows how different threads, ribbons and yarns effect their outcome! This is a notebook class designed to get your creative juices flowing with wonderful new textures to add dimension and interest to your projects - whether they are quilts, clothing or any other textile application. Skill Level: All.

SA19 – Embroidered Wholecloth Quilt $35

Try a new twist on traditional wholecloth. Create a stunning wallhanging using beautiful machine embroidery as the centerpiece! Decorative stitches and freemotion quilting will add to your creation. Finish it off with a few crystals! Lots of great techniques and tips packed into this class. Sewing machines for this class are provided by Viking. Skill Level: All.

SA20 – Cherished Treasures $30
Mary Lou Rankin Evening Class

We have all collected treasures, old lace, antique linens, vintage fabrics, obis, kimonos, ethnic textiles, buttons, etc. with great plans for using them. Are your treasures still in a drawer waiting to be rediscovered? Come explore design possibilities these treasures offer when they are incorporated into your fashion sewing. Also learn some sewing techniques to use when working with these special textiles and design ideas that you too will want to try. Skill Level: All.

SA21 – Easy Cathedral Window Flowers $35
Shelley Swanland Evening Class

These 3” flowers are fun and quick. They use the easiest elements of the Cathedral Window process, 3-D piecing and rolled bias curves. In class we will make up to nine flowers, sash them together and roll the bias folds to create the curves. These flowers can be embellished in so many ways from beads to embroidery to yoyo’s and buttons. Skill Level: All.

Supply List: 1,2,3,8,9,11,12,13,27,29,30,33,34,36. Pattern: Easy Cathedral Window Flowers. Fabric: (if not buying kit) 4” scraps of different flower colors and greens, 1/4 yd. for sashing, 3/8 yd. border. Optional but nice: 27” square of batting and backing. SA22 – EQ6 for Beginners $35
Sheila Williams Evening Class

In this class you will learn the basics of getting around in the EQ6 program by getting blocks from the Block Library, fabrics from the Fabric Library and adding them to the Project Sketchbook. Then use both of these items to create your own quilt design. You will take a look at the Quilt Layouts already in the program for quick projects plus learn how to use EasyDraw to draw your own blocks or make changes to blocks from the Block Library. You will even learn to color your blocks, print templates and calculate yardage for your quilt design. Students must have basic computer skills for this class. Computer technical support is not available. Skill Level: Beginner.

Supply List: 14,15. Other Supplies: Personal laptop computer with CD-ROM drive, external mouse, computer power supply, EQ6 installed and activated, EQ6 User Manuals, highlighter, paper clips in multiple colors, computer eye glasses (if you wear them). Optional software: Sew Precise 1-4, BlockBase2, Stash 1-19 or any EQ Block add-ons. Kit Fee: $10, includes all sample files to be used in class. Important Requirements: You MUST have good working knowledge of your computer. If you borrow or purchase a new laptop for class, please spend some time getting to know the computer before class. EQ6 MUST be installed, activated and working.

     

SA23 – Focus on Feet $35
Lou Wright Evening Class

Feet are the tools we use to make sewing easier, so get out your box of attachments and learn to use them! Bring any mystery feet to class to have it identified by Lou. If you bring a foot that cannot be identified you will receive a gift. All brands of sewing machines will be discussed; however, Bernina sewing machines will be used in class as well as a supply of Bernina feet. Students will learn edge stitching, stitching in the ditch, gathering, ruffling, pintucking, rolled hemming, bias binding, couching plus Bernina’s Stitch Regulator foot. Sewing machines for this class are provided by Bernina. Skill Level: All.

Supply List: 8,11. All other supplies and fabric will be included as a kit in class at no additional charge.

     

SA24 – Embellishing with Hot Fix Crystals $35
Cheri Meineke-Johnson Evening Class

This is the year for embellishments! Students will learn embellishment tips and tricks while decorating a purse with Swarovski hot fix crystals. Your kit fee includes one purse to embellish, 3 gross of crystals, tweezers and tray to work with crystals. A loaner tool will be provided for class. Cheri will also demonstrate techniques to add crystals to T-shirts, denim jackets and of course that special quilt or wallhanging. You’ll leave class with a beautifully embellished purse and all your questions will be answered about this hot new trend. Skill Level: All.

Supply List: 14,15. Kit Fee: $50.00, includes purse to be embellished, 3+ gross Swarovski hot fix crystals, tweezers, tray and a loaner tool to be returned at end of class.

 
     

SA25 – Hand Quilting: Metal to Metal $35
Jean Brown Evening Class

Jean will discuss construction in a very different way and all will learn the “magic” quilting technique she created with the original Aunt Becky Tool. Skill Level: All.

Supply List: 8,9,12,21,35,36. Other Supplies: quilting needles (the best are Jeana Kimball or Piecemakers, size 10) and Aunt Becky Tool. Fabric: frames and fabric to work on will be loaned for the class, for consistency. Thimbles and Aunt Becky tools will be in class if needed to borrow, or other sizes needed.
