I am not kidding! This class is perfect for those that don't draw or paint but wish they could. We will use technology to help create your own original contour drawing from your photograph/s or you can choose from one of my ready to go line drawings. You will learn to paint using TSUKINEKO fabric inks and special stick applicators. We will conclude day 2 with discussions about bordering, binding, quilting and hanging your piece.

This class is an exploration in shading and selecting fabrics to create a summer still life. Using the supplies provided in the optional kit* or by selecting your own textured solids put together a lovely 17 by 24 wall hanging. The fabric alone may produce the desired dimensions for a perfect pineapple, or a luscious pear but if it needs a nudge we will put our hand to the use of oil pastels to add this extra depth.

Day One: Learn basic principals and tools to help you with the design of pictorial, traditional or contemporary quilts. This Power Point Video lecture and hands on discussion features many examples for the visual learner in all of us. Tackling major characters or focal areas Secondary characters or landscape accents Defining the Background or negative space Auditioning Borders Quilting the Pictorial Quilt. Then individual design time and discussion of possible construction techniques for your pictorial quilt. Bring an enlarged to project scale size photo of a focal point for your pictorial quilt design. Sharp details with medium to large shapes work best! Then, have fun manipulating commercial fabrics to add texture and dimension to your characters or pictorial settings. Demonstration includes fabric paints, inks, overlays and discharging to create the perfect shading for your pictorial objects.
Day Two- You don't have to be an artist to add pictures of birds, flowers or animals to your quilt blocks or designs for your own pictorial compositions. Learn how to turn your photo into a PATTERN that can be appliquéd to a quilt block or scene. With confidence in basic design, and pattern making, you are now ready to tackle appliqué construction. Free objects, animals, trees, barns etc, can be moved around on your quilt top much like a flannel board character. We will make a Machine Appliquéd Swan constructed as a free object that can be placed on a future quilt block or garment. The skills learned in this afternoon session will help you construct your focal object and begin your own Pictorial Quilt.

We will work from a white still life, drawing it in many different ways to learn about value, shadows, texture, highlights and different kinds of perspective. This is a drawing class so don't be afraid if you cant draw, we will learn how to draw together by learning to really see through blind contour drawings. We will add color, exploring many different color schemes and their impact. Then images will be projected on to the still life to create color, texture and drama. Several abstract drawings for quilts will be the end product of the class.
