So 7000 Swarovski crystals were added to enhance Linda's incredible quilting. 8000 crystals total on this quilt (7000 on back, 1000 on the front). Most who view this quilt can't decide which side is their favorite, the front or the back. What do you think?

#6099 - Tapestry

Winner of $750.00 for Outstanding Art Quilt
sponsored by P & B Textiles

Entered by Carol Taylor (Pittsford, NY)
Made by Carol Taylor
Started in 2003, Finished in 2003
Artist statement: Using hand painted and hand dyed fabrics to create texture, this triptych resembles a piece of tapestry. Each piece is different and can be hung separately to enjoy the vertical melding of light to dark values. When the three are hung together as a triptych, each column enhances the others with the play of light to dark values horizontally. That's what you notice from a distance, but the piece draws you in to view the intricate writing and printing of the individual fabrics too. Perhaps this piece is representative of a modern-day crazy quilt.

#6424 - "My Family's Road to California"

30 in x 30 in
Winner of $100.00 for 2nd Place - Road Challenge Quilt
sponsored by Road to California, Inc.

Entered by Margaret C Booker (Ventura, CA)
Made by Margaret Booker
Artist statement: I chose to make a wall hanging using one "Road to California" block for the entire project. I hand-quilted the outline of the state in several squares and a covered wagon, since that was the mode of transport for most of my family arriving in the state. I "fussy-cut" appropriate sections of the Road to California fabric that said "Road to California." The Road to California fabric was used to back the quilt. Because the fabric was mostly selected already, the major challenge for me was to research the dates of the arrival of my ancestors in California. There were stories I had heard as a child, but I did not remember any specific dates. I was able to gather this information, as well as more stories. Perhaps there is another project in the future?

#6426 - Greetings from California

The back of the jacket features a cross-stitched map of California. Quilt blocks using the requred complimentary fabrics are on the front and back. I used 7 of these fabrics (look in the pockets and the lining).

Design basis: Vest pattern by Judy Murray
Artist statement: The challenge fabric covers the back of my vest. The stripping represents the many highways that all lead to "Road-To-California" quilt show. The gold stitching and beading signifies the Roadway lighting and the stars are the many successful applicants. My wearable art entry utilizes all eight complementary fabrics. I made the skirt to complement the vest using the challenge fabric in the skirt panels with four complementary colors in the belt.

#6422 - Mainely, 2 California

30 in x 30 in
Winner of $50.00 for 3rd Place - Road Challenge Quilt
sponsored by Road to California, Inc.

Entered by Neen M Scott (Brunswick, ME)
Made by Neen Scott
Artist statement: There is a bright, shining star in my quilting journey. One that has gathered the world together, with needle and thread, quilt frame and the inspiration for many, many quilts. Quilts that make it into every quilt show, from one place on the globe (CA) and all the way around to there again. She has made it possible for thousands of friendships to form, some fleeting and some, lifetimes long. Some of those latter friendships are mine. They span, for now, from ME (Maine) to CA. My quilt depicts that span and my bright shining star, Alex Anderson. I am grateful.
