Best Quilt from First Time Entrant
Sparkling Vases
Tom Russell

Knoxville, TN

This original quilt design was created as a block of the month pattern for hgtv.com. I wanted to create an art quilt that at first glance seems complicated, but is actually simple to create.

Outstanding Large Quilt
American Still Life
Sandra Leichner

Albany, OR

This quilt was a challenge for myself to capture in fabric, the simple and elegant style of the American Federal Period Still Life Paintings. An original design incorporating padded hand appliqué, hand embroidery, hand painted/hand-dyed and commercial fabrics, machine pieced and quilted.

Best Pictoral Quilt
The Red Pagoda
Susan McBride Gilgen

Madison, WI

Inspired by the Asian Collection in the National Arboretum in Washington, DC. All edges encased in zigzag, crazy or blanket stitch, machine appliquéd, embroidered and quilted. Includes hand-dyed, overdyed and painted fabrics.

First Place - Traditional Wall Mixed
I Promised You a Rose Garden
Donna Senecal

La Canada , CA

Fabrics designed by Laurene Sinema inspired me to begin this quilt while travelling. I used Jeanna Kimball's Old Voices, New Impressions as a design source. It is pieced, appliquéd and quilted by hand.

First Place - Traditional Wall appliqué
Meadows of Black Forest
Ellen Heck

Somis, CA

A look at this quilt as a celebration of nature and album quilt combined. The flowers are remembered from many outings to the black forest as a child.

Wearable Best Surface Embellishment
The Poet's Lover
Catherine Panofsky-Pardeilhan

San Luis Obispo, CA

Inspired by the design seen on the lapel. I expanded the pattern using piecing, double-needle stitching and hand beading. Poem by Yeats is hand painted. The blouse is lattice-smocked with 1,700 overhand knots.

First Place - Wearable
Fall Floral
Lyric Kinard

Cary, NC

Various wools and rayons were first washed then draped on a mannequin to shape patterns. Details were drawn on wonder-under, fused, cut and then all edges were stitched together. Quilted pieces are layered and quiltied before construction.

First Place - Traditional Large Pieced
Sparkle Plenty
Claudia Clark Myers

Duluth, MN

Twenty split LeMoyne Feathered Stars swirl in this quilt, while 32 smaller stars dance around in the corners. Primrose Gradations, batiks and commercial prints were used in this paper-foundation piecing.

First Place - Traditional Wall Other
Forever Crazy
Melanie Murphy

Westlake Village, CA

Growing up in New England, I had seen many crazy quilts. About ten years ago I started teaching myself. This quilt contains some of my earliest blocks as well as more involved floral embroideries. All seam stitches, embroidery, embellishment and beading is done by hand.

First Place - Innovative Wall Mixed
Yosemite Triptyoh
Colleen Wise

Puyallup, WA

A family trip to Yosemite National Park inspired this piece. Fabrics were hand-dyed to capture the play of light and shadow on the immense granite domes. The quilting invites you to examine the intimacy of the leaf underfoot.
